Ch. 4 Dreaming of a puppy

Despite the long way home, being hungry and all the other difficulties he had to face, Kyle felt quite a happy child.  Even though he was forced to experience life’s ruff side ever since he was born, he kept thinking positive and hoping that everything would eventually get better. Also, living in poverty had thought him to cherish all those little good moments that would now and then come his way and feel grateful they existed. Those occasions, others would probably find usual, uninteresting even, brought joy to his heart.

He was happy when a girl from his year had agreed to do her homework with him. He was happy when a boy from his class invited him over after school. That boy’s older brother gave Kyle some advice on school’s assignments and agreed to cook dinner for both youngsters. Kyle felt endlessly grateful as he munched on the fresh vegetables. It was the first time he could remember himself eating an ordinary meal. Having sandwiches was nice but they couldn’t come even close to that salad. Kyle was even more pleased when a friend of his said it would be perfectly fine for Kyle to sleep in one of the spare beds. Even though his father wasn’t into the idea, he didn’t disturb Kyle. He probably took pity on him for being so poor. However, there was one thing that Kyle loved more than all – animals. He was very fascinated by the butterflies he came across on his way home one day. They swooped through the air so gracefully. One even landed on his hand for a few seconds. It was a new experience to Kyle and one he would smile about every time he remembered it. But it wasn’t only butterflies he liked. Whenever he got a chance to play at the local library, he would always pick that very same bunny toy. He knew that it was meant for children younger than him, but he simply couldn’t help playing with it for hours on end. If one said Kyle had a soft spot for animals, they would be right. His most precious encounter with the animal kingdom, the one he would always define as his most cherished childhood memory, happened at the local gym. Kyle was there to take a shower as usual. When he entered the bath, he was surprised to find a small dog there. It was probably the cutest one he had came across. Not only that, but it turned out to be quite playful, too. Ever since meeting Rocket (that’s what the doggie’s name was), Kyle had dreamt of having a pup of his own. Sadly, it couldn’t happen – his mother despised animals and would not agree to let him get a dog under any circumstances. Oh, well, maybe when I’m older Kyle would say to himself. Then he would go on to pretend there was a royal court and he was the prince. And he ordered his servants to bring him a pet dog.
