Ch.3 Long Way To The Bus Stop

The next morning Kyle woke up early. He had to catch the school bus but in order to do that, he had to go to the outskirts of the town. After all, the last thing he wanted would be somebody seeing where he lived. He remembered the dialogue he and Delaney had had when he had mentioned inviting a kid over when they were still at Starlight Shores.

– Mum, is it okay if Pete comes over after school tomorrow?

– Are you crazy? Of course it’s NOT okay.

– But… but why?

– Why? WHY? I’ll tell you why – because we’re living at an abandoned dump.

– This is not a dump. It’s our home and…

– …and if someone sees it you’ll be sent to an orphanage. It sure will make it easier on my part, though.

Since that day Kyle had never even thought of letting anyone in their “dwelling”. He was more than terrified that the social workers would find out where he is being raised and take him away. Sure, Delaney wasn’t the best mother ever, in fact, she was not even a decent mother but Kyle simply refused to have that thought cross his mind, let alone admit it. He had walked one kilometer to the nearest bus stop before, he would continue doing it. That was not a chore to him; it was more like a way to relief the tension from being yelled at for the smallest thing. Those long walks would help him clear his mind and concentrate on school. Strangely, Kyle was an excellent student and was never late for the bus. Today was no exception and he got on it in 8 am sharp.
