Ch.2 A Walk Round the City

The boy had run for over 20 minutes, when he arrived at a wooden shack. The sign next to it read “Junkyard”. Kyle knew that this was not an appropriate place for a 10-year-old but he wanted some time on his own. Plus, the place seemed decent enough he convinced himself as he opened the door. The shack consisted of only one room which had a table, a deck and a bookshelf. Being a keen reader, Kyle grabbed an adventure book and curled up near the deck.

It had been nearly 3 hours since he had ventured off the junk yard. As he was left with practically nothing to do, Kyle had decided to go for a walk round the city. That’s how he arrived at a small park with a few chairs and tables. There was one thing that caught his eye, though, and it was a shiny metal easel. It’s sitting there, all alone, just like me. Perhaps I can make use of it – I’ve always wanted to learn how to paint. And while he was painting, he was smiling for the first time in months.

Half an hour later it was starting to get dark but Kyle was still wandering the streets of Sunset Valley, when he came by a tall red building. It had a sign which read “Fire Department”. From his own experience, Kyle knew that in there he could find some food and perhaps a shower and as the place seemed empty, he decided to give it a try. After a couple of minutes he was munching on a nice Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwich. He had to be quick, though – if somebody saw him, he would be sent to an orphanage. So as soon as he finished his dinner, he ran out of the station.

I hope I’m not late the boy thought because he didn’t wanted Delaney to yell at him again. Unfortunately, she would do it no matter what he had done. But to his surprise, when he got home, his mum was nowhere to be seen. As usual, she had ventured off and had left him to his own devices. This time, however, Kyle was too exhausted to even give it a thought. All he managed to do was to collapse on the bench, falling asleep right after.
